Course Content

Demonstrate knowledge of the various types of pollution that can be found in swimming pools
1.1 Identify and categorise the different types of pollution that can be present in swimming pools
1.2 Provide examples of pollution for each of the identified categories

Understand and implement practices that promote hygienic swimming, bathing, and maintain a clean pool environment
2.1 Explain how to promote hygienic swimming and bathing practices in a pool environment
2.2 List the benefits of good bather hygiene and state the recommended cleaning frequency for the pool surround, as well as the optimum cleaning procedure for the pool bottom

Comprehend the principles of disinfection in pool water
3.1 State the purpose of residual disinfection in pools
3.2 Explain the significance of pH levels for effective disinfection

Understand the fundamentals of water balance
4.1 Identify the necessary factors that must be tested to perform a balanced water/Langelier test
4.2 Explain the acceptable water balance parameters and their objectives

Understand the key principles of a pool circulation system
5.1 Identify the primary components of a circulation system
5.2 Identify the different systems used for surface water removal
5.3 Explain the dangers associated with pool inlets and outlets

Comprehend the key principles of pool chemical safety
6.1 Identify the relevant regulations associated with pool chemicals
6.2 Explain why Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is necessary while handling pool chemicals
6.3 Identify the control measures that must be implemented to ensure the safe use of chemicals
6.4 Summarise the training requirements necessary for safely operating a pool plant.

Course Assessment

To obtain this qualification, learners will need to undertake a practical demonstration of water testing and a multiple-choice assessment. All practical elements must be performed independently by the learner without assistance from the assessor or another learner. The multiple-choice assessment must also be completed independently by each learner under exam conditions, with the invigilator being either the tutor or another approved person. To pass the qualification, learners must complete the practical assessment satisfactorily and achieve the minimum pass marks for each unit in the multiple-choice assessment. All assessments are completed in line with the STA swimming pool water treatment assessment guidance.

Course Requirements

On the first day of the course, learners are required to be at least 16 years old. It is recommended that learners have a basic level 1 proficiency in both literacy and numeracy.

For companies booking a course on-site, you should also provide a room large enough to hold the required number of attendees comfortably.
